Today marks the 51st anniversary of Apollo 12 astronauts Pete Conrad and Alan Bean becoming the third and fourth people on the Moon!

In 1969, the two men landed on Oceanus Procellarum, a 3.5 billion year old lunar region. Originally thought to be formed from a massive asteroid impact early in the Moon's history, scientists now have a better grasp on the true geology of the landscape. It is currently believed that Oceanus Procellarum got its shape from tension cracks in the Moon's crust cooling around upwelling magma plumes.

That's some geology that's out of this world!

Across all STEM fields, the geosciences have been said to be the least diverse. In fact, underrepresented minorities in higher levels of the geosciences receive degrees at a rate 10% lower than the the average rate for STEM fields.
